A payment gateway securely transmits payment information between a merchant's checkout and the systems that process or authorize the transaction. Some providers bundle gateway, processing, acquiring, fraud, and reporting services; others offer these as separate products.
A gateway can collect payment details, tokenize credentials, route a transaction to a processor, return an authorization result, and provide tools for recurring billing or payment-method selection. The exact capabilities depend on the provider and integration.
A gateway quote may exclude acquiring or processing costs, so ask for a complete pricing schedule.
Evaluate supported countries, currencies, payment methods, settlement currencies, integration quality, documentation, uptime and support commitments, reporting, refund handling, fraud controls, and compliance responsibilities. For a global business, confirm that the provider can onboard your legal entity and pay out to your intended bank account.
Use official SDKs and documentation, protect API credentials, separate test and live environments, and avoid storing sensitive payment data unless you have the appropriate controls and compliance processes. Confirm the division of responsibility between the merchant and provider.
Use the same monthly volume, average order value, countries, currencies, payment methods, refund rate, and expected chargeback volume. Include fixed and optional service charges. Ask for written confirmation of any negotiated rates and when they can change.
A payment gateway is more than a checkout widget. Compare its complete cost and operational fit, including the processing and acquiring services that may sit behind it.
