A prepaid card is loaded with funds before it is used. Unlike a typical debit card, it is not necessarily linked to a conventional bank deposit account. Unlike a credit card, it generally does not involve borrowing, though product terms vary.
Not every card has these fees. Review the current fee disclosure before buying or loading a card, and check whether the card is accepted in the countries and currencies you need.
A debit card usually draws from a linked bank account. A prepaid card uses a previously loaded balance. A credit card allows spending against a credit line, which must be repaid under the agreement. Consumer protections, deposit insurance, and dispute rights differ by product and jurisdiction, so do not assume all cards are covered in the same way.
Check the exchange-rate method, conversion fee, ATM fee, and any limit on foreign purchases. If a terminal offers to charge in your home currency, compare the displayed rate with the provider's conversion method. Keep in mind that some prepaid products support only selected currencies or merchants.
Prepaid and gift-card programs can be used for employee spending, incentives, travel, and customer rewards. Businesses should evaluate issuance costs, funding and reconciliation, fraud controls, refund handling, program restrictions, and any regulatory obligations that apply to the program.
Prepaid cards can help manage a set spending balance, but loading, withdrawal, and conversion charges may change the total cost. Compare the complete fee schedule and terms before choosing a product.
